A Message From the Vandenberg Food Pantry Greetings! Vandenberg's Food Pantry clientele numbers are growing! The Airman & Family Readiness Center is seeking military spouses to assist with food distribution and receive and shelve food drive donations. The process begins with a food pick-up at the Santa Barbara County Food Bank on the Monday of the first full week of each month at 1100. Food is then stocked and made ready for distribution the following days, currently Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Volunteers observe strict confidentiality and provide friendly, non-judgmental service. Often, it is a time to learn more about the families and their needs and provide information and referral to other support services. Sometimes it just helps the customer to have someone to talk to. With a team of volunteers, it allows adequate time for this interaction without overlap of customers. Our goal is not to just give out food but help Airmen and their families move toward financial freedom. To that end, the enrolled members participate in a quarterly spending plan review with an A&FRC Community Readiness Consultant. If interested in helping our families through one of these volunteer positions, contact Lori Pitman at 734-3522 or Sue Voshell, 606-0039. Thank you for giving this thoughtful consideration. V/R, Sue Voshell

Welcome to Vandenberg Spouses' Club... In my almost 2 years here at Vandenberg I have heard some amazing things about the VSC. So I thought for my introduction as your new spouses club President, we could play a little game of "Fact or Fiction". I am sure that you have heard at least one of these during your time here, but if not, then don't worry from now on you too will know the Truth about our Vandenberg Spouses' Club. FACT or FICTION 1) To be a member of the VSC you must live on base and have an active duty spouse? FALSE We are made of all military branches assigned to VAFB. You may reside on or off base, have a spouse who is active duty or retired, male or female, officer or enlisted. So basically if you are stationed here, then we have a place for you. 2) White gloves must be worn at all VSC functions. FALSE Obviously they don't go with flip flops.. Unless you need to wear them to stay warm when the fog comes in.. 3) This year the VSC gave out close to $13,000 in Academic and Sport scholarships for dependents and spouses. We also gave $3600 for base programs and functions that qualified. Then we ended the year with helping local and national deserving charities with over $4500 in donations. All of which was made possible by the success of our Annual VSC Auction. True The VSC is about spouses helping spouses and giving back to the community. So by supporting your VSC you are supporting your base and community. 4) You can only join the VSC once a year at the Membership Kickoff. False You can join anytime, but for maximum usage, sign up at the Membership Kickoff and Community Fair August 14 6:30pm at the PCC. Remember the first 50 spouses E-5 and below are free! 5) We have implemented a new rule for the year, no laughing, smiling or fun! False This year we know you will have fun! We have added 3 family events (one even has SNOW) to our calendar in response to your requests for "Family Fun Events on Base". In addition to our extraordinary regular events you know and love, Bunco, Wine Tasting, Pamper Night, Death by Chocolate, Auction, Bingo, Member Appreciation Dinner, this year we have also added a Luau, and a Christmas Tea. We are sure to please one and all! 6) Last but not least. The VSC will pay for your gas to attend member events! False!! You are on your own on that one, but since we are all trying to conserve our gas expenses, we have most functions on base for your convenience. Well hopefully I have helped you with some fictions that you may have hear, so that now you will know and love the VSC as I do! Please watch your emails for upcoming events and announcements. In the next few weeks you will be getting our new VSC Clubs update.. We have some really cool new clubs this year( shopping, outdoor enthusiast, cooking, helping hands), plus our usuals. We aim to please! I wish you all a great summer, don't forget to check the website for new info. Angella Thiel VSC President |
